Running a team quiz at work without it feeling like a mandatory activity

The fastest way to make a team quiz resented is to put it after hours. Whatever it is worth, it is not worth an evening people did not offer. Schedule it inside the working day, cap it at thirty minutes, and end on time even if it is close — a quiz that finishes while people still want more gets asked for again.

Say the length in the invitation. "Quiz, 30 minutes, Thursday 15:00" is a thing people can agree to. "Team fun session" is not.

Some people find live competition in front of colleagues stressful, and pretending otherwise does not change it. Let people join and watch without playing, let them play with the camera off, and do not comment on who did not come. The ones who enjoy it will come back; the ones who do not were never going to be won over by attendance.

Quizzes about the company, the product or the quarterly numbers are training with a scoreboard, and everyone can tell. The point of the half hour is that it is not work. General knowledge, music, film, geography — categories where the finance team can beat the engineers is exactly what you want, because the hierarchy of the day does not carry over.

The one exception worth making: a round written by a different colleague each time, about anything they like. It is the cheapest way to find out that someone in accounts knows an implausible amount about Formula One.

If the team is bigger than six or seven, split into rooms rather than running one large one, and mix the departments. Two rooms of five with a comparison at the end is livelier than ten people where four never get a word in. Rotate who is in which room between sessions so it is not the same pairs every time — that is where the actual team-building happens, not in the scoring.

One person opens a room and pastes the six-character code into the team chat. Everyone joins from their browser — no installs, no licences, nothing for IT to approve. Cameras optional, voice optional, the timer and the scoreboard run themselves so nobody has to host.
