Geography

Geography is the category that rewards having looked at a map recently. It covers countries and capitals, rivers and mountain ranges, borders, oceans and the handful of places whose position is strange enough to be worth a question on its own — Kiribati, which sits in all four hemispheres, being the standard example.

What makes geography work well in a quiz is that it is verifiable. There is no argument about which country borders which, and no drift over time the way there is with records or popular culture. A geography question written today is still correct in five years, which is not true of much else.

The difficulty ladder is unusually clean here. Easy questions ask where something is. Medium questions ask about relationships — which river runs through which countries, which sea connects to which. Hard questions get at the consequences: why a border sits where it does, what makes a particular strait strategically important, which physical feature explains a country's settlement pattern.

Geography carries the largest share of estimation questions in the game, and it is the natural fit for them. Distances, land areas, populations and heights all span ranges where a reasoned estimate beats a guess but nobody knows the exact figure — which is precisely the situation the estimation format was built for.
