Sports
Rules, records and the things commentators get wrong.
Sports is the most polarising category in the game. In most groups one or two people clean up and everyone else watches — which is exactly why it is worth picking as one of three categories rather than on its own.
The questions cover rules, records and history across football, athletics, motorsport, tennis and the Olympic disciplines. Rules questions tend to be the great leveller: plenty of people who watch a sport every week have never had to state the actual regulation, and the answers are often narrower than the folklore around them suggests.
Records are the other half. They date, which is a genuine problem for a quiz — a question about the current holder of anything is wrong the moment it is broken. The questions here lean towards records that have stood long enough to be facts rather than news, and towards the structural questions that do not expire: how a scoring system works, why a particular format exists, what a rule was introduced to prevent.
If your group has one person who follows sport seriously, this category is where they will make their margin. Combining it with something they are weaker at is the usual counter — the three-category limit exists precisely so a round can be balanced across a group rather than optimised for one person.
