Technology covers computing, engineering and the history of the inventions that ended up everywhere. It is the category where working in the field helps least — knowing how to use a thing and knowing why it was built that way are different kinds of knowledge, and the questions ask for the second.

A good share of the questions are historical: which invention came first, what a technology was originally built to solve, which company or person got there before the one everybody remembers. That last category is a recurring theme, because the popular story about who invented what is wrong more often than not.

The rest is about mechanism. What a particular component does, why a standard exists, what constraint forced a design decision that now looks arbitrary. These are the questions that reward curiosity over credentials, which is why the category tends to produce less predictable winners than sports or entertainment.

Technology also ages faster than any other category, and the questions are written with that in mind. Anything tied to a current product or version would be stale within a year, so the pool leans towards the things that have settled: protocols, principles, and inventions old enough to have a history.
